Women’s chess grand prix starts off with major upsets in Doha, Qatar

The Sixth Women’s Chess Grand Prix event started in Doha with quite a few upsets today. Here are the first round results.

  • Chiburdanidze, Maia (GEO) Munguntuul, B. (MGL) 0-1
  • Cramling, Pia (SWE) Mkrtchian, Lilit (ARM) ½-½
  • Fierro, Martha (ECU) Zhu Chen (QAT) 1-0
  • Koneru, Humpy (IND) Dzagnidze, Nana (GEO) 0-1
  • Sebag, Marie (FRA) Danielian, Elina (ARM) 0-1
  • Stefanova, Antoaneta (BUL) Xu Yuhua (CHN) 0-1

Standing up for the national anthem of Qatar.

The participants of the event include four former Women World Champions: Xu Yuhua, Maia Chiburdanidze, Antoaneta Stefanova and Zhu Chen and the fifth one – Nona Gaprindashvili – is a Head of the Appeal Committee. The winner of the tournament will receive 6,500 Euros out of a prize fund of 40,000 Euros and the overall winner of the series will win a further 15,000 Euros at the end of the series.
